It takes a lot of self confidence and self esteem to step up and keep stepping up when life gets rough. Like the stairs below, it’s difficult to see the very top step when we’re viewing it from the bottom. Sometimes the top becomes clearer when someone points it out. We then become more confident and are able to get there because we can see that glimmer of hope.
In this case, the top of the steps in the picture below is beside the glimmer of light you can see near the the tree on the right. Now I’ve raised your confidence that the top is in view, you can finally see it. You’re more comfortable now you know where it is. Your self-esteem about being able to climb there is growing by the minute.
The first step up
The first thing about building self-confidence is to take that first step. Are you sick of your job? Do you want to fall in love? Do you want to save your marriage? If you look at the above picture again you’ll see that the first step is the closest to you. You have to be willing to take that one. Don’t dream of becoming the manager if you haven’t done what’s necessary to climb all the rounds. Don’t wish you could have a blissful relationship without first having the self-esteem to stick it out when times are hard.
Step up with confidence
If you ask any guru how to be confident or how to build your self-esteem, they will tell you to do the very things that are difficult for you. A child learns patience by waiting for things. We’re not born with patience. We learn it. It’s the same with confidence and personal development. We learn by doing.
Steps to succeed with confidence
Take that first step.
Keep climbing.
Take others with you. I showed you where the top of the stairs was. Do that for others because it helps you focus on it too.
When you get to the middle, look back to see how many you’ve conquered. Looking back builds self-esteem because it shows you the strength you’ve already put in.
Look forward too, because it’s now easier to see the top and this keeps you focused.
Don’t be afraid to take a breather if you need it. But keep going.
Make sure you step up with someone else. Confidence is sweeter in company. It’s hard to be confident on your own.
Don’t forget that self-esteem is learning not getting. Savour your climb so you can help others step up with confidence too.

Hi Anne,
Wonderful post, indeed!
I loved the way you explained building confidence through comparing the process to the steps on stairs. One thing struck me from your post. As you said, we can see the first step. Sure, the last step is further away. However, we can still see the first step! Let’s get onto the first step and let the journey up begin.
Thank you.

Exactly, Hiten. The first step is there, just waiting for us to take it. Sometimes the magnitude of the job can really turn us off doing it. However, just concentrating on what I have to do today – how to begin – is very helpful when you feel overwhelmed.

Building confidence is definitely a lifelong endeavor and you are so right, it does start with that first step. The willingness to be uncomfortable and take that first step is essential. Thanks for your article. I appreciate your words.

Hi Tom, thanks for your input. I’m so glad you said that word, uncomfortable. The first step can indeed be uncomfortable. In fact, in most cases it is. The thing to note is that the discomfort gets easier as the steps progress. Thanks for adding to the discussion.
Anne,
I love the way you mention to take the first step. That all it takes…one step! After that it becomes so easy. I work with people with low self esteem. When one of them takes the first step, it is so exciting to me because I know that they are on the beginning of their road.
On the other hand, if a client is with me a while and doesn’t want to take that step, it is difficult, but I tell she/he that I can’t work with them because they are not even trying. Sometimes they surprise me and come back saying they worked on it. Oh boy what a great moment and then we continue working.

The thing is, the first step is only difficult until we take it. Sometimes the anticipation is harder than the real thing.

Building self-confidence isn’t an overnight job, and you need to work on it by going slow and taking small steps, just as you mentioned about the staircase. I guess when you do that, you can never really go wrong. 🙂

Build self Confidence is a very tough task for a person who have a very silent behavior. My Girl Friend is one of them she is a very hesitating person. When i was first meat her she was feeling very uncomfortable after 20 minutes she starts crying. 🙂 I do very work hard to develop confidence in her. It 2 years passed she is still with me and very are going to married. But Still she feel very Uncomfortable to talk with strangers. 🙂
I think confidence building is an amazing task. It can take hard work, and the person has to want to do it. But it can be done. I wish good luck to anyone going through this!
You know what Miss Anne, I love all your articles. Building confidence is not easy for a person who’s lack of attitude to pursue it. Thank you so much for sharing to us your insights about life. Take care always.
Great post, nothing is easy in this world, but if you believe in your self and work hard, you can achieve whatever you want.
I love your statement “Don’t be afraid to take a breather if you need it. But keep going.”. Sometimes we are too afraid to take even for small steps, but we should remember that nothing that happens that we cannot handle in this life
