What is confidence? A Google search reveals that, ‘Confidence is the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust’. I suppose confidence can be described as such but in most cases, confidence – whatever it is – is missing in our lives. How can we then know how to describe it? It’s not that we don’t have confidence, it’s just that it’s been so buried – so deeply – for such a long time, we no longer know what it feels like. Confidence, therefore can be a state of mind, firmly sharpened by constant use.

It’s not ‘just’ a feeling. Confidence is also a state of being. Like intelligence, without constant use, it can also be stripped away. You used to have this get-up-and-go. Life, unfortunately has taught you to be more careful, to think more – and for longer. You’ve allowed life to shave the sharp end off your omph. You’ve let go of that sense of what made you push forward with that ‘I can do it spirit’. You’ve just let it fall out of your hand by slow and steady release.

How do I get confidence

the flow of confidence is sometimes buried

Look at the image above. Towards the bottom, left you can see a reflection – a tiny spark of light. This is the only sign that a running stream is buried under all the foliage. I’m sure you can imagine (and actually see) the moss growing on the side of the stream, under the plants.

This is what has happened to your confidence. It’s there, you’ve always had it. You’ve just allowed it to be buried under all the moss life has thrown at you.  What’s happened to the get-up-and-go you had as a child, a teenager. You’d make friends with the new girl/boy even though you’d never seen them before. You’d ask your parents for that new item you wanted even though they told you ‘no’ ten times before. You knew that soon the time and the place would be right enough for them to say ‘yes’.

You went for that job even though you knew you weren’t fully qualified. You pushed your luck, and you did get that job. You’ve lost that bit of you we call ‘confidence’. Perhaps that’s why life feels like it’s slowed down a bit.

How to get that confidence you’ve lost

There are several ways. You can just decide today to strip yourself of all the moss you’ve accumulated – the moss that hides your confidence. Get up and do something daring you’ve been scared to do (not dangerous). Check the articles below for the one that suits your needs best. I’m sure there’s something there for everyone, to help you find that confidence you’ve lost. The question is not ‘What is confidence?’ It’s ‘Where is my confidence?’

  1. What a wonderful way to express confidence. I love the analogy of that little light there in the picture. And the way you have stated that confidence is there, but could be buried. It is a perfect example! So many people lack confidence in many ways. Here, you show us how to attain it, even with your other links. A wonderful job! I will share it with my readers because they will appreciate this journey of knowledge that you have shared.

Thank you, Donna. When I saw this stream with the moss growing around it, I had the idea for the post straight away. It was (like you said) a perfect way to demonstrate how we hide the good things within us.

Thanks for sharing, Donna. I really do appreciate it.
